You cannot manage what you're not measuring

Dietary sodium is invisible. It doesn't taste salty in canned soups, deli meats, bread, and restaurant food — yet these sources can push daily sodium intake to 3,000–4,000 mg without the patient realizing it. For someone with hypertension or heart failure, that excess sodium is directly working against their treatment.

This tracker makes sodium visible. Every meal logged shows its sodium contribution, daily totals are automatically calculated, and alerts flag when you cross 1,500 mg (the AHA ideal) or 2,300 mg (the upper limit). Over 30 days, the patterns become clear: which meals spike your sodium, which days you stay within target, and what changes have the most impact.

The sodium reference sheet — color-coded from Very Low to Very High — gives you the quick reference you need to make better choices without having to look up every food online.

"Sodium restriction is one of the most impactful dietary changes for blood pressure and heart failure management — and one of the most commonly underestimated. Patients are often shocked when they start logging and discover how much sodium is hidden in their normal diet. That awareness is the first step to meaningful change."

Common Questions

Where do I find the nutritional information for foods?
Nutrition labels on packaged foods are the most accurate source. For fresh foods and restaurant meals, the USDA FoodData Central database (fdc.nal.usda.gov) is a reliable reference. Many food apps can also help.
What if I eat the same meals repeatedly?
For recurring meals, enter the nutritional data once and copy-paste the row on repeat days. The daily totals will calculate automatically.
Is this appropriate for heart failure patients?
Yes — heart failure patients have strict sodium restrictions, typically 1,500–2,000 mg/day. This tracker is specifically designed to make those targets visible. Always follow Dr. Nyange's specific dietary prescription.
What's the most important nutrient to track for heart health?
Sodium has the most direct and rapid impact on blood pressure and fluid retention. Saturated fat drives LDL over time. Fiber has broad cardiovascular benefit. All three are tracked in this file — but if you're starting with one, start with sodium.
